Introduction to Facelift

Constantly relying on skin care products and other treatments to reverse signs of aging can be extremely tiresome and, in many cases, unproductive. When fine lines and wrinkles turn into deep lines and sagging skin, a facelift is the only real way to correct this. The results, however, can last over a decade or more, especially with proper upkeep.

Dr. Andrew Compton in Troy, MI, offers this facelift to individuals in the Detroit area and beyond, carefully assessing each patient’s facial features and areas of concern to achieve natural, long-lasting results that complement their unique anatomy.

What is a Facelift?

A rhytidectomy (more commonly referred to as a “facelift”) reduces visible signs of aging by tightening sagging skin, smoothing deep wrinkles, and lifting facial tissues. Excess skin is removed, the underlying muscles and fat are repositioned, and the skin is redraped to achieve a firmer, more youthful appearance.
Traditional facelifts focus on natural-looking results, avoiding the overly tight or “pulled” look by restoring volume and structure rather than just removing loose skin. Different types of facelifts are also available, depending on one’s aesthetic interests and the severity of their skin concerns. Many of our Detroit facelift patients will also pair their surgery with a neck lift procedure for comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

  • A mini facelift is a less invasive procedure ideal for those with mild to moderate skin laxity, especially in the lower face. It involves smaller incisions (usually around the ears) and focuses on lifting the cheeks and jawline for a subtle, refreshed look. Recovery is typically faster than a full facelift, making it popular among younger patients or those who want a light “touch-up” without extensive downtime.

  • The deep plane facelift is the most transformative option, designed to correct severe sagging, deep wrinkles, and loss of volume. Unlike older facelift techniques that only tighten the skin, this method lifts and repositions the deeper SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) layer, resulting in a longer-lasting, natural look without a “pulled” appearance. It’s ideal for those with significant aging signs in the mid-to-lower face and neck. Recovery is longer but provides the most dramatic and enduring results, making it well worth it for most patients.

  • A liquid facelift is a non-surgical alternative that utilizes injectables, such as dermal fillers and Botox, to restore lost volume, smooth wrinkles, and provide mild lifting effects. It’s best for early signs of aging, but results are temporary, usually lasting 6 months to 2 years, depending on the products used. While it doesn’t provide the same structural lift as surgery, it’s a great option for those who are not ready for surgery or looking for a subtle improvement.

Who Are the Best Candidates for a Facelift?

Facelifts performed by Dr. Compton are ideal for individuals in the Detroit area or beyond. They’re suitable for all genders and are especially beneficial for individuals experiencing signs of insecurity related to aging. The most common patients are those with deep wrinkles and sagging skin, though individuals experiencing early signs of aging can also benefit.

Patients should generally be in good health and not smoke for the best results. If you do smoke, committing to quitting at least 4-6 weeks before and after the procedure is essential, as smoking can adversely affect the results of the procedure. If you’re not sure whether you’d make a good candidate for a facelift, Dr. Compton can help you make that determination.

What Are the Benefits of a Facelift?

The main benefit of a facelift, regardless of which method you choose to go with, is its ability to reduce signs of aging. This includes addressing wrinkles, reducing sagging skin, correcting a double chin, eliminating deep creases, defining facial contours, and even creating a sculpted jawline. In the case of mini and deep-plane facelifts, patients appreciate their long-lasting results as they no longer need to rely on fillers or endless skincare products to achieve their desired look. Once the procedure is complete, the results can last for decades, restoring confidence with a youthful appearance.

In addition to these benefits, the incisions are made to minimize scarring after the procedure, further achieving a natural look. Best of all, this procedure can benefit any adult, regardless of gender or age.

What’s the First Step?

Before jumping into the procedure, a consultation with Dr. Compton at his Troy office is required. This is to ensure that you are a suitable candidate for the procedure and that Dr. Compton thoroughly assesses your skin and any concerns you may have. Based on this assessment, combined with your medical history, he will be able to develop a surgical plan that outlines the methods to be used to achieve your desired look. He’ll review the plan in detail with you and provide an opportunity to ask questions, ensuring you’re as informed and comfortable as possible before moving forward. Once you agree with the plan, your procedure can be scheduled, and pre-operative instructions will be given.

What to Expect on the Day of Facelift Surgery

When the day of your procedure comes, you’ll arrive at our Troy office, where pre-operative prep will begin. Dr. Compton and his team will review the plan one more time, mark the incision sites, and address any last-minute questions. The procedure will look different depending on the type of facelift you’re receiving.

  • Mini Facelift: Anesthesia (either local or general) will be administered before surgery begins. The procedure typically takes 1.5 to 3 hours. During the procedure, small incisions are made around the ears or hairline, and the underlying tissues are tightened. Excess skin may be removed, but the adjustments are subtle.
  • Deep Plane Facelift: General anesthesia is administered, meaning you will be asleep for this procedure, which can take 3 to 6 hours, depending on whether it’s combined with other procedures (like a neck lift). Dr. Compton will lift and reposition the deeper facial layers, not just the skin, for a natural and long-lasting lift. Incisions are made along the hairline and behind the ears.
  • Liquid Facelift: Before beginning, a numbing cream may be applied to the injection sites; however, anesthesia is not necessary. The treatment takes 30 minutes to an hour. A series of dermal filler injections (like Juvederm or Restylane) restores volume in the cheeks, jawline, and temples, while Botox helps smooth wrinkles.

Patients receiving a mini or liquid facelift can typically leave the same day as their treatment. However, depending on the complexity of a deep plane facelift, they may need to stay overnight for monitoring.

Facelift Recovery

Before leaving your procedure, Dr. Compton will provide aftercare instructions tailored to your specific treatment. Depending on the method used, recovery times and severity can vary. Liquid facelifts require almost no downtime, with only slight swelling around the injection site for a day or two, but results are immediately visible afterward. With surgical facelifts, swelling, bruising, and tightness are expected within the first week and can be managed with ice packs and pain relievers. With a deep plane facelift, you’ll have bandages around your face and possibly surgical drains, so having a caregiver during this time is highly recommended. Exercising should be avoided for at least 2-3 weeks, after which you’ll likely also be able to return to work. After a month, as swelling subsides, you’ll start to see noticeable improvement. The real results will show at about the 3-6 month mark.

How much
does a
Facelift
cost?

The cost of a Facelift in Detroit depends on what kind of facelift you’re receiving, the expertise of the surgeon performing the facelift, the complexity of the procedure, and other factors such as medications, anesthesia, and facility fees. On average, Dr Compton’s patients will pay between $20,000 to $45,000 for the Vertical Vector, Extended Deep Plane Facelift, which will include all of the indicated surgical procedures.

The facelift package often includes browlift, deep necklift with submandibular gland reduction, fat transfer, liposuction and other ancillary procedures like eyelids. Not all procedures are indicated on every patient, so pricing will vary. However, Dr. Compton in Troy will provide a more
accurate estimate of your procedure during a consultation, along with financing options to make the treatment more financially manageable.
