Kybella is a fat dissolving agent that is injected subcutaneously into the chin / neck fat to dissolve it and tighten the surrounding skin and soft tissue. It is performed in office with very small needles with minimal pain. During the injection some patients experience a mild burning sensation which is tolerated well with ice packs applied to the area.
Submental liposuction is a surgical procedure during which a small incision is made under the chin and behind the earlobes through which a small cannula is introduced. As suction is applied through the cannula, the fat is broken apart and removed mechanically. This is a very effective way of removing isolated pockets of fat and sculpting the chin, jawline and upper neck.
Liposuction is a surgical procedure so there is some downtime, typically 1 week or less depending on the amount of fat and age of patient in which it is removed. Liposuction as a standalone treatment is appropriate for younger patients without much skin and soft tissue laxity. For those patients with laxity, it is a great addition to a face or neck lift to provide that improved result. Benefit compared with Kybella is that it is a one-time treatment, typically performed while you are asleep, with only one period of recovery.

It is performed in office with very small needles with minimal pain. During the injection some patients experience a mild burning sensation which is tolerated well with ice packs applied to the area. Post treatment Ibuprofen is helpful that evening but is generally not needed for long. Kybella is very effective at permanent reduction in the submental fat as these cells are destroyed and do not regenerate. The amount of fat reduction can be tailored to find your desired result.
Most patients require 2-4 treatments spaced 6-8 weeks apart depending on the degree of submental fat.
Downtime is minimal but is possible with the first injection as many patients experience mild to moderate swelling and firmness. As with any injectable treatment, there may be bruising, swelling, redness, and firmness. Swelling after subsequent injections is generally considered to be mild.
Benefits are that there is no downtime but a longer duration of treatment. Cost is about equivalent to submental liposuction and results can be tailored to your desired level of correction. Kybella can be safely used in all ages as it does tighten the skin with the correction of mild laxity, but may uncover/ worsen platysmal bands.
