Introduction

Introduction to Earlobe Repair

A torn or stretched earlobe can be caused by heavy earrings use, congenital separation, trauma, or gauging. Repairing the ear lobes is a frequently requested, simple procedure that can be done in our clinic with minimal inconvenience. In some cases, people have waited years before seeking earlobe repair, thinking that their ears would heal together naturally or shrink back to normal after being stretched. Unfortunately, there is a limit to the healing process and an enlarged hole may not shrink enough to hold an earring securely or look normal. If the lobe is severely stretched or has been torn from trauma, surgical repair can restore your ability to wear earrings and help the earlobes to look normal again. If you are seeking earlobe repair surgery in the Detroit area, consider getting in touch with double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Andrew Compton. Please read below for more information.

What is Earlobe Repair?

Earlobe surgery is a reconstructive procedure to close an enlarged earring hole or repair a complete tear through. Earlobe repair is a straightforward, in office surgery done with local anesthesia only. Dr. Compton will remove the skin between the 2 sides of the hole and stitch the earlobe back together. A gauge repair will be similar but more complicated given the tissue excess. If there is an enlarged hole, the hole will be removed and the skin and soft tissue closed with suture. The ears will be healed and ready for a new piercing in a few months, if desired.

What to Expect on the Day of Earlobe Repair Surgery

On the day of your earlobe repair surgery in Troy, you will be welcomed by Dr. Compton and his staff at the facility. They will settle you in the surgical suite and review your plan and answer any questions. Dr Compton will then inject local anesthetic into the earlobes, then sterilize and drape them for surgery. Dr. Compton will make small incisions to remove excess skin and meticulously close the incisions with fine sutures. Depending on the individual case and patient preference, he may use absorbable or removeable sutures for skin closure. On average, an earlobe repair surgery will take 15-30 minutes per side.

After surgery, your ears will be cleaned and covered with ointment. You can drive yourself home, given that only local anesthesia was required.

Most patients can return to work the same day if desired. We typically do not cover the site with a bandage. You will be cleaning the incisions twice per day and applying ointment. Sutures will be removed in 5-7 days and repeat ear piercing can be done as early as 6 weeks, though we prefer to wait 3 months for the scar to mature.
