Introduction to Brow Lift

Whether you are surprised, happy, angry, or confused, your eyebrows are one of the most natural and common ways to show emotion. While expressing anger, sadness, or confusion through your eyebrows is completely normal when you are experiencing those emotions, consistently showing those expressions when you are not actually feeling that way can be very annoying and may lead others to misjudge how you’re feeling. At Andrew Compton, MD, in Troy, we help men and women rejuvenate their facial and forehead appearance for a happier, more youthful appearance with our brow lift procedure.

What is a Brow Lift?

A brow lift is a cosmetic procedure designed to rejuvenate the appearance of the forehead and eyebrows by surgically raising drooping eyebrows, reducing forehead creases, and smoothing frown lines to help you look less tired, angry, or sad. The procedure targets sagging eyebrows and repositions them to a higher, more youthful position. Excess skin is also removed, leaving the remaining facial tissue fresh, smooth, and tight, creating a brighter, more radiant appearance.

There are a few possible techniques that can be used for a brow lift:

The pre-trichial lift technique creates an incision along the hairline, allowing the scar to be hidden once it forms. This technique helps patients who want to lift their eyebrows, lower their hairline, shorten their foreheads by removing a strip of skin and the underlying tissue along the incision line.

The endoscopic lift uses a small camera and tiny incisions hidden in the hairline, allowing patients to recover with no visible scar. It tightens and smooths the whole forehead and lifts the eyebrow area for a more awake appearance.

The coronal lift places the incision on the top of the patient’s head, further back in the hairline. This technique elevates the hairline, leaves a large scar,  is more invasive and is best for patients with severe skin laxity and deep wrinkles.

The Midforehead Direct Brow lift is a technique to lift the brows through an incision across the entire forehead in a horizontal crease in the middle of the forehead.  This is a precise and long lasting lift that is technically straightforward and can be used to correct asymmetric brows.  The incision is visible but tends to heal well and appear as a natural forehead crease over time.  This is beneficial for men with a receding hairline, large forehead, or significant asymmetry.

The Castanares direct brow lift surgically removes skin above the outside part of the eyebrow hair on the forehead to directly reshape and elevate the tail of the brow.  While the other techniques lift the entire forehead skin upward as one unit, this technique can precisely reshape each brow individually.  The trade off is an incision on the forehead just above the eyebrow hair.  This is often used to tweak the shape of the eyebrow and can be combined with other lifts if needed.

The temporal lift targets the outer third of the eyebrows and the skin of the temple to improve crows feet lines and sagging at the tail of the brow.  The incisions are similar to an endoscopic lift , it is often combined with eyelid surgery.

What to Expect on the Day of Brow Lift Surgery

The day of your brow lift surgery at our office in Troy we will review the postoperative instructions and verify your consent.  You will go totally asleep with an intravenous sedation and then be comfortably numbed with local anesthesia.

After Dr. Compton confirms that the anesthesia has taken effect, he will perform the techniques discussed during your consultation. Over the course of the procedure, your brow and forehead will be tightened and lifted to create a more youthful look to match your goals.

The procedure will take between 1 and 3 hours, depending on the extent and techniques used and whether it is combined with other procedures. You will need to be driven to and from this appointment with a trusted contact who can safely take you home and be with you for the first night of your recovery.

Brow Lift Recovery

As you recover from your brow lift surgery in Troy, you should keep your head elevated, especially while sleeping, to minimize swelling. A cold compress over the temples is also recommended for the first 48  hours to minimize swelling and reduce discomfort.  Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and bending at the waist for a minimum of three weeks.  You may gently wash your hair with baby shampoo after three days. The sutures  and staples will be removed after 7-10 days. Take the prescribed pain medication to ease the tightness and swelling in your forehead, take plenty of rest, and stay well hydrated. You must not color your hair for 1 month after surgery, and you must avoid direct sunlight on the incisions for several months to ensure your scars heal properly.

Follow all postoperative instructions provided to you by Dr. Compton to ensure you achieve optimal results and minimize potential risks.
