What Is Tumescent Liposuction?

The tumescent method is the most popular liposuction procedure in the United States. It is recommended by plastic surgeons due to its safety and effectiveness. Tumescent lipo offers a more comfortable recovery period with less bruising.

It involves injection of a fluid called tumescent solution at the start of the procedure. Tumescent solution contains epinephrine, a local anesthetic called lidocaine, and normal saline.

Because of these components, the solution numbs the region to any pain or discomfort, lessens blood loss, and causes swelling of the fat for easier removal. The term “tumescent” is a reference to the swelling effect that tumescent solution has on the fatty tissues.

What Is the Liposuction Procedure Like?

The entire lipo procedure can take up to two hours. The duration depends on the location and size of the area treated. If multiple areas are being treated, the procedure may last up to four hours.

The liposuction procedure begins with Dr. Compton injecting a large quantity of the tumescent solution into the affected area. It takes about twenty minutes for the solution to start working.

This wait time is vital, because it allows time for the blood vessels to shrink (vasoconstriction), which is key to minimizing bruising and blood loss. It also enhances the analgesic effect, thereby reducing post-operative pain.

Next, Dr. Compton makes a small incision in the treatment area and inserts the cannula (a thin tube connected to a vacuum device). Dr. Compton makes repeated back-and-forth movements with the cannula to loosen stubborn fat and remove it via vacuum suction.

Once the required amount of fat is extracted, the incision may be closed, often with medical staples or stitches. In some cases, the incision is instead left open for drainage. This decision is based on the surgeon’s discretion. A compression bandage or elastic compression garment is then applied.

Your Liposuction will be performed by Dr. Andrew Compton at Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital, West Bloomfield surgery center or in his office in Troy.

Liposuction Healing and Recovery

Most patients return home on the same day as the procedure. Since you might feel groggy, it’s recommended you bring a family member or friend with you for assistance.

Most people are able to return to work and their normal routine within a week after the surgery. Dr. Compton may prescribe pain medication to assist you during the recovery phase. For most patients, however, over-the-counter medications are sufficient.

You can expect minor bruising, soreness, and/or swelling for a couple of weeks. The following tips are recommended to help alleviate the swelling:

  • Avoid eating salty foods.
  • Follow a healthy diet.
  • Wear compression garments at all times.
  • Keep your legs alleviated while sitting.

The final results of your liposuction procedure will be noticeable once all swelling subsides. For many patients, full results are visible within six months; it may take a year in some patients. Following the recommended post-operative care instructions will help you see results faster.

Liposuction Cost

The details of your lipo procedure will determine the overall cost of the surgery. Price is impacted by the amount of fatty tissue removed, the size and number of treatment areas, the total surgical time, and the techniques used.
